Skills needs are changing rapidly with digitalisation, AI and the green transition all having the potential to improve productivity and efficiency across industry, but at the same time posing a huge challenge.
In an article published in FE News in July 2024, Alison Morris, Director of Policy at the Skills Federation spoke to member organisations Ann Watson, CEO of Enginuity, Laura Mansfield, CEO of ScreenSkills; and Hayley Pells, Policy Lead at Institute of the Motor Industry about the priorities for skills development in their sectors. The discussion looked at options for how the new Government could make the apprenticeship system work better for learners and industry.
Key issues featured in the article include adapting apprenticeships to ongoing technological shifts, addressing skills shortages and ensuring entry-level pathways for young people.
The importance of flexibility of apprenticeships was a key theme with a call for reforms to the apprenticeship levy to better support small and medium-sized enterprises. They also discussed the key role of sector skills bodies in shaping policy, providing crucial employer insights and aligning training with industry needs to close the skills gap effectively.
