To mark National Apprenticeship Week 2025, Alison Morris, Director of Policy at Skills Federation, argues that apprenticeships play an integral role in driving economic growth, benefiting employers, individuals and the wider economy.

In this exclusive article for FE News, Alison provides evidence of the benefits of apprenticeships to employers with 86% reporting that they help develop skills relevant to the organisation and 92% stating that hiring apprentices leads to a more satisfied workforce and a noticeable boost in employee retention.

Delivering apprenticeships effectively can be challenging for some employers, argues Alison – some sectors such as the creative industries, where freelance work is prevalent, find the current apprenticeship model is not fit for purpose. Alison welcomes the recent government announcement on shorter and Foundation apprenticeships and urges government to consult with sector skills bodies to ensure quality provision is maintained.

“Apprenticeships are a powerful tool for employers looking to build a skilled, loyal, and adaptable workforce,” comments Alison. “By investing in apprenticeships, businesses can enhance their reputation, reduce turnover, and foster a culture of continuous learning. For individuals, apprenticeships offer fulfilling career pathways and the opportunity to develop practical skills that lead to long-term success.”
